Chapter Fourteen

ARDEN

DURING THE DAYS FOLLOWING the benefit, I tried to hide how frazzled and flustered Gabriel had left me.

Luckily, it seemed something other than Gabriel’s surprise appearance kept Barnaby preoccupied and off my back. Except when we’d finally returned home that night.

Then he’d been more unpredictable than usual. If I thought he was going to retaliate, I couldn’t have been more wrong, which was even more nerve-wracking.

Instead of laying into me, he’d brought me another glass of champagne while I cleaned the makeup off my face and unpinned my hair.

He congratulated me on a job well done that evening.

He helped me out of the elaborate gown, and he was curiously gentle when he tugged down the zipper in the back. No further threats of accidentally snagging my skin with the sharp edges of the zipper’s teeth. He’d held onto my hand as I stepped from the gown, which he then hung up inside the garment bag to be delivered to the dry cleaners.

As I removed my high heels, sighing with relief, he took off his cufflinks and his tie.

I’d been on edge, waiting for the literal other shoe to drop.

I donned a robe, tying the sash tightly around my waist.

“Have a seat.” He gestured toward my dressing table then waited for me to do as he bid.

All the while, tension creeped up and down my spine.

His solicitous act could’ve been just one of his many creative ploys to make me think everything was fine and dandy only to have him turn on me when I least expected it.

After I was seated, he stood behind me.

It probably made him feel like a real big man to loom over me when in reality he wasn’t that much taller than me.

He fingered the necklace’s complicated clasp at the back of my neck, and I still felt the ghost of his squeezing fingers from earlier. The clasp gave way, and one great weight lifted as he removed the choker.

He held the diamond thing up to the light, admiring the overstated piece of jewelry, before he placed the detestable creation back in its velvet-lined box.

“I knew I made the right choice with this necklace, just as I knew I made the right decision to make you my wife.”

Tilting my face up to his, he stretched my neck at an uncomfortable angle. Something odd gleamed in his eyes.

“Yes,” he murmured. “Even if you are so damnably difficult sometimes, darling.”

When the hell is he going to say something about Gabriel?

Releasing my neck from his grasp, he closed the jewelry box with a loud snap.

At the sudden noise, I jolted on the bench.

He snickered. “Jumpy tonight, my sweet?”

“I’m just tired.” I spun on the bench to face him and even went so far as to squeeze the back of his hand.

“Are you going to enlighten me about what transpired between you and Gabriel after he dragged you from the ballroom?”

Ahhh, here it is.

My heartrate picked up immediately as I remembered the glorious rush of our impulsive kisses.
